Panagiotis (Panos) Tsopelas is an Associate Professor of the Department of Applied Mathematics and Physical Sciences with a subject of study “Dynamics of Structural Systems”. He is also the Quality Management Manager of the Materials Strength Laboratory which is accredited by ESYD for fire resistance tests according to EN 1634-1.
Dr. Tsopelas is a Civil Engineer graduate of the National Technical University of Athens (1989) and holds an MSc (1991) and a PhD (1994) from the University at Buffalo. He has served as Professor (2013-2015) and Associate Professor (2008-2013) in the Department of Civil Engineering, University of Thessaly, and as an Associate Professor (2003–2008) and Assistant Professor (1998–2003) in the Department of Civil Engineering, The Catholic University of America, Washington, DC, USA.Dr. Tsopelas' interests include the following subjects: structural dynamics, earthquake engineering, seismic isolation, experimental structural mechanics/dynamics, computational structural mechanics/dynamics, soil-foundation-structure interaction, energy dissipation systems, seismic design, health and vibration monitoring of structural systems, honeycomb and re-entrant metamaterials for vibration mitigation of structural assemblies under seismic actions.
Dr. Tsopelas is a member of scientific associations: Technical Chamber of Greece (TEE), Society of Civil Engineers of Greece (SPME), Hellenic Department of Earthquake Engineering (ETAM), Hellenic Society of Theoretical & Applied Mechanics (EETHEM), European Association for Earthquake Engineering (EAEE), Hellenic Section of ASCE (ASCE Hellenic Group). Reviewer of papers of international scientific journals: ASCE Journal of Engineering Mechanics, ASCE Journal of Structural Engineering, Journal of Engineering Structures, MCEER Technical Publications, Earthquake Spectra, EERΙ, Journal of Intelligent Material Systems and Structures, Archive of Applied Mechanics, and others.
